Canadian, naturally!

Hello faithful Naturally Right blog readers! This is Natasha from Sohobutterfly, blogging to you direct from where else but CANADA! Whooooo!

Now, you all know that Megan is currently visiting your Northern neighbors, in the gentle land of Canadia. Specifically, Vancouver. Many of you may not have been to Canada, and being that I am Canadian, I feel it my natural duty to ed-jum-a-cate you on the ways of the Canadian … and on the new and exciting things that Megan is currently learning/trying/seeing.

And so, I thought I would share a few choice (ahem, my favorites and perhaps slightly modified) “You know you’re Canadian when” snippets.

You know you’re Canadian when:

  1. You’ve frozen your tongue to something metal and lived to tell about it.
  2. You’re not offended by the term “Homo Milk”.
  3. You drink pop, not soda.
  4. You understand the sentence “Could you please pass me a serviette, I spilled my poutine.”
  5. You know that a mickey and a 2-4 means “Bush party in snow pants, eh!”
  6. You can talk about the weather with anyone. Even creepy homeless people.
  7. You dismiss all beers under 6% as “for children or the elderly”.
  8. You know that Casey and Finnegan aren’t a Celtic music group.
  9. You participated in “Participaction”.
  10. You are excited whenever an American TV show mentions Canada.
  11. You wear socks with sandals.
  12. You know all the words to “If I had a million dollars” by The Barenaked Ladies, including the inter-stanza banter between Steven and Ed.
  13. You wonder why there isn’t a 5 dollar coin.
  14. You can sing “Oh Canada” in French and actually know what the words mean!
  15. Your backpack has more than one Canadian flag iron-on.
  16. You know the French equivalents of “free”, “prize” and “no sugar added” thanks to your extensive education in bilingual cereal packaging.
  17. You had a crush on Joey Jeremiah from Degrassi Junior High.
  18. You think -10 C (14 F) is mild weather.
  19. You’re proud that Captain Kirk came from Montreal.
  20. You think it’s HILARIOUS when you hear of people believing Canadians live in igloos.

Now, be honest, did you know all of those things about Canadians?

And now, I will leave you with a photo that Megan emailed me earlier today. She’s having such a great time in Canada with her new camera, and she’s been taking lots of pics. This is her standing in front of her Vancouver hotel, fresh and exhilarated after a long day of sight-seeing and snow-shoeing:

Megan in front of her Igloo Hotel

See? Doesn’t that look like simply palatial lodgings? I bet you’re jealous now!

Safe travels, Megan! Can’t wait to see more pictures when you’re back home!

According to B

Posted by B on October 17th, 2008 under Uncategorized Tags: ,  •  6 Comments

Hello all, its me B (aka Brad aka Naturally Wrong).  When I was asked informed that I was to be a guest blogger I thought that was silly.  I don’t think the readers of Naturally Right want to hear about the newest car that I want or the newest piece of electronics that I need. No, I would have to find something that would appeal to the readers here. What I came up with was how Megan and I met… According to B.

It all started one summer when I was working for the J.D. McCarty Center for Children with Developmental Disabilities as their IT guy. I was friends with the guys in the Marketing Department and would spend time down in their office each day just saying hello and shooting the breeze. Well that summer they got a new Intern, an attractive intern, and one that couldn’t work a computer to save her life (or so I thought). I was called down there multiple times a day to fix different silly problems with her computer that could be fixed by simply turning off the Caps lock, locating the “Any” key, or plugging in the mouse. Nows a good time to say I didn’t mind one bit, this girl was hot! and she has the prettiest eyes I’ve ever seen, but I’m getting ahead of myself.

The company bowling tournament/fundraiser was coming up and somehow she magically got put on my team (I’m looking at you Dani). That year we came in dead last on the bowling and first place for the costumes (looking again at you Dani). As a reward we received a free gift card for Hideaway pizza and our team decided that Megan and I should use the card (still looking at you Dani). It was our first date, the first time we could talk about stuff and get to know each other outside of work and I was hooked. It was soon after this that Megan’s internship was done and we began to date.

Fast forward 4 years and we are celebrating our 2 year anniversary and loving every minute of it. Looking back it all seemed to happen so fast but that is how love is. Love happens when you don’t expect it and it knocks you out and puts you on cruise control. Which is a good thing cause if I was in control I would have messed something up by now. Fortunately, someone is watching out for me because I have found my best friend and soul mate. I love you baby and can’t wait to see what the future holds for us.

I <3 geeks.

Hello Naturally Right readers! For those of you who don’t know me, I am Lauryn and I am very excited to be one of Megan’s guest bloggers this week while she and B are enjoying Canada, eh!

Megan and I have a special blogging relationship. We actually know each other! Like, for realsies. She is married to my boyfriend’s brother. Follow? So my main squeeze (Matt) is her brother-in-law.

Actually, Megan probably doesn’t even know this but she’s the reason I started blogging in the first place! Matt had shown me this site and I was very intrigued by the whole concept. I was also eager to learn more about the two family members I heard him talking about the most. Before long I jumped on the bandwagon and started LauReality!

We actually met in person for the first time in May when Matt and I went to Oklahoma for a visit. It was great to finally meet the woman behind the blog after I’d been checking out Naturally Right for so long. We stuffed our faces with good food, took lots of pictures, and enjoyed a little too much beer.

That may or may not be me drunkenly laying my head down on the table at the sushi restaurant we went to. I cannot say.

Beyond our love for booze, raw fish, and sharing our thoughts and feelings on the internet, Megan and I have an even stronger bond; we are in love with Sagowitz men.

Our sweet, thoughtful, dedicated guys are geeks to the core. I don’t think I’ve ever known two men over 30 who get so jazzed about a new video game coming out, or who run over to the toy aisle in Target when they spot a kid-size model of the Death Star (Matt, I’m looking at you).

Me: What are B and Megan up to this weekend?

Matt: I don’t know, but B is at a LAN party.

Me: [Silence] As in, local area network? They have parties for that?

This love for gadgets and gigabytes goes back to when they were kids and it allows them to share their excitement even though they are many states away.

Although many eyes have rolled over this hobby of theirs, I’m sure Megan will agree that there is something endearing about it. Being passionate about something keeps you young at heart, and if all it takes to put a smile on their faces is a dude flying over the English Channel with a jet pack, well, then that’s great. We love our geeks.

Besides, while they’re jabbering about their computers we’re usually blogging in the other room. I guess they found their matches.

So what is your man passionate about? What brings out the “geek” inside and makes him smile like a little kid on Christmas morning?

The time has come

Finally, it is vacation time!  Actually, technically the vacation doesn’t start until Sunday when the conference ends, but as far as I am concerned once I lock the front door I am on vacation.  Woohoo!

Timing worked out perfectly this year.  I don’t think B and I would have been able to squeeze in (or afford) an anniversary trip if work wasn’t paying for half of it.  Did I tell you that I love my job and the fact that they send me to conferences in Canada?  Love it!

I still have some packing to do because even though I am a planner, I check and recheck everything up until the last minute.  Also, I have to pack for B because otherwise he will end up with no underwear and one pair of socks.  Oh the burden of being a wife.  Just kidding honey!  Sort of.  Oh, don’t get mad, you know it is true.

So since I am blogging and surfing the internet when I should be finishing up my to do list, anyone have last minute suggestions about things to do in Vancouver?  I think this will be the first vacation that I haven’t planned out weeks in advance.  I figure since we will be in town a few days before the vacation really starts we will have some time to do our research.  I am really just excited about getting away, going to Canada and seeing the great fall colors!  Oh, and I have been promised there is great sushi.  I plan on finding my sushi limit on this trip.

(And don’t suggest the nude beach.  Hubs already has and it is not going to happen!  Crazy Canadians and their nudity!)

Don’t worry about being bored while I am gone, I have set up some great guest bloggers to keep you entertained.  Enjoy the mayhem while I relinquish control of my blog!  Just kidding guest bloggers, I don’t expect too much mayhem.  Everyone have a great rest of the week and I will be back next Wednesday!

Nothing like a brand new haircut before a vacation!  I am ready to go now.

Monkey Dead

Posted by naturallyright on October 13th, 2008 under Uncategorized Tags: ,  •  3 Comments

It’s official.  Zoey killed her monkey.  There are only so many times that I will sew her toy back together before I finally give up.  Those so many times happen to equal one.  My emergency surgery lasted a couple weeks before I discovered a horrible tragedy.  A horrible and messy tragedy.  When Zoey makes a hole, she makes a hole.  There was stuffing everywhere.  And I took pictures, what else!

I also used this opportunity to try out the various settings on my new camera.  I must say, I am very impressed!

This was the full automatic mode.  It gave the typical washed out flash with glowy eyes effect.

Next, I tried turning the flash off.  Eh.  It made the picture yellow.  Also, Zoey felt the need to pose with her work of art.

Finally, I went to full manual mode.  I upped the ISO, changed the white balance and kept the flash off.  I was very surprised and pleased with the results.  It is still a point and shoot camera and indoor pictures are my weakness, but I think the manual mode has a world options.  I haven’t tried out the macro setting or any of the other features.

I promise I will quit talking about my anniversary, just after this one last post…

I took some pictures of our wonderful candlelight dinner.  This was for two reasons, first I want to be able to look back and remember how ridiculously romantic we were in our youth, and two, I wanted to practice taking pictures in low light.  So enjoy the sappy sweetness from our candlelight anniversary dinner, we sure did!

The random and the weird

Posted by naturallyright on October 10th, 2008 under Uncategorized Tags: ,  •  6 Comments

It has been awhile since I shared some random (or weird) facts about myself, so what perfect timing for LauReality to tag me to share seven more.

1. Did you know my husband, B, is 12 years older than me?  Most people don’t know since B has such a young face.  Also, B is a big kid who still enjoys his toys, while I consider myself to be pretty mature and responsible for my age.  We balance each other out perfectly.  But just to weird you out, I entered first grade when B was graduating high school!  We love playing that game with people who don’t know us.  Consider it our party trick.

2. I am scared of the deep end in swimming pools.  This fear has drastically calmed down with age, but I still won’t swim to the bottom and don’t even think about asking me to touch the drain.  And it is not a fear of being sucked into the drain, it is a fear of something coming out of the drain.  Something like Jaws.  Yes, I know, that is ridiculous, but for the longest time I really thought Jaws lived in the deep end of pools.

3. As a child, my favorite make believe game was pretending to be Ariel and marrying Eric, my prince charming.  Except the problem was this game only worked when I was at my friend’s house and we were playing in her hot tub.  Since we both couldn’t marry the prince, we pretended Ariel had a twin sister and Eric had a twin brother.  We would swim around in circles pretending our legs didn’t work waiting for our prince to come rescue us.  Active imagination much?

4. I am not a big seafood fan, but I have yet to get tired of sushi.  I could eat sushi everyday if my wallet allowed it.  I love all kinds of sushi too.  Salmon, tuna, eel, yellowtail, crap, shrimp … the list goes on.  But seafood, like Red Lobster, I only order the popcorn shrimp and I only enjoying going to a seafood restaurant every few months.  It wasn’t until I discovered my love for sushi that I stopped ordering hamburgers at seafood restaurants.

5. I am the baby of the family and the only girl on all sides.  That explains a lot about my *somewhat* spoiled tendencies.  I can’t help it that I married a man who lets me get away with these *somewhat* spoiled tendencies.  Don’t let B tell you otherwise, he gets away with a lot too.

6. I have an unnatural attraction to water, or vice versa.  Water won’t leave me alone!  I can’t go near water without it ending up all over me.  Taking a drink, down my shirt.  Washing my face, all over me and the bathroom.  Doing dishes, water everywhere.  I don’t know what the problem is, but it only occurs with water.  I think I need water rehab.

7. When I was around junior high age, I went through a serious cowboy phase.  Perfect time to start wearing boots to school, because puberty wasn’t enough trauma.  And it wasn’t just wearing boots, I owned Rockies, and wore them, in public.  I even had a purple pair.  I had red boots and black boots and brown lace-up boots.  I listened to country music all day every day.  I wanted to marry a cowboy when I grew up.  And yes, I grew up in Texas, so this might not seem to weird, but I grew up in Dallas, TX.  No farmland in sight.  My classmates were straight from a Gap ad.  And there I was, wearing purple pocketless jeans.  No wonder I hated junior high!

I am suppose to tag seven people now, but this has gone around the blogs like wildfire this week.  I don’t think I have seven people to tag who haven’t already participated.  If you want to do it, just do it, you can say I forced you.

Sweet Nothings

B: Honey, do you want to read my comic book?

M: Bwahahahahahahahahah! *snort* Hahahahahaha! *snort* HA!

B: What?

M: I am sorry honey, I could have sworn you asked me if I wanted to read your comic book.

B: I did. I think you would like it.

M: Hi, I am Megan, your wife. Have we met?

Two Years … Already?

Posted by naturallyright on October 7th, 2008 under Uncategorized Tags: ,  •  9 Comments

Today B and I celebrate our two year wedding anniversary. Two years! I remember our wedding like it was yesterday, so two years seems surprising. But at the same time, it feels like B and I have been together a lifetime. Some days it is hard for me to remember life before him.

Tonight we are going to have a casual, romantic night at home. Fillets on the grill, a mushy card exchange and then watching our wedding video. All in comfy pajamas, what could be better? Next week we are going to Vancouver for a little work and lots of fun! B and I took a wonderful vacation for our anniversary last year and I am so glad we managed to squeeze in a trip again this year!

And don’t forget our wonderful wedding vacation two years ago!

October has become our travel month and it couldn’t work out better. Fall is just kicking in full force. Great weather, beautiful colors and it is the perfect time to get away before the crazy holidays kick in!

So here is to two years, another anniversary and another great trip to celebrate! And, a wonderful man to enjoy every step of the way with. I love you honey, my best friend, my soul mate, my partner for life!
