I have this friend. Yes, I have a friend, shut up. She will probably deny knowing me, but I swear she is a friend. Even if I have to stalk her when she comes in town and buy her lunch just so she will hang out with me. Whatever.
So my friend, she is borderline crazy, but lucky for her it is the entertaining kind of crazy and not the scared for your life crazy. You can’t blame her though. She lives in a town that is only famous for the world’s tallest hill. Seriously, it exists. Look it up.
Yesterday, while forcing my friend to hang out with me she casual mentioned having a banjo like it was a perfectly normal item to have in the house. Any other banjo owners out there, speak now. No one? That is what I thought.

This is not my friend. Or is it?
Come to find out my friend (I feel like I should be putting that word in quotes) actually plays the banjo. She is one of those people that has the awesome talent of being able to play any instrument with no lessons whatsoever. She plays by ear. Bitch.
One day many years ago, my friend decided she needed a party trick. Banjo it is. I am still trying to figure out what bet she lost. Her reasoning was the guitar was to cliché. Alright, I can understand wanting to have a unique talent, but a banjo, really?
Not only does my friend argue that her banjo playing skills make her infinitely cooler, she promises it will make me cooler by association. So does it? Does knowing that I have a friend who can play the banjo make me cooler or does it just make me an Oklahoman?
Discuss.

You are so jealous of my banjo!!!!!!!!!!! It does make you cooler by association!
I love love love the banjo. It’s my second favorite instrument after the cello. Do I think it makes your cooler, much cooler. I told hubby the other day that I wanted to take banjo lessons, and he looked at me all funny. So, he’s officially NOT cool. :o)
As someone who is notorious for befriending the musically inclined I have to say…cooler. No doubt!
Banjo players are a little “different”, which makes them cool. So, yes, I would say you are cooler by association.
Here is another cool (and HOT) banjo player, who happens to be from Oklahoma, who I happen to have met. He was fabulous. AND he comes to Guthrie every now and then to visit his friend and fellow banjo player, Guthrie native Byron Berline. Byron owns the Double Stop Fiddle shop in Guthrie and he, Vince and a few others get together to “jam” every now and then.

So….your friend is from Poteau? I scattered my father’s ashes from the top of the world’s highest hill. He used to play up there as a boy. Small world huh?
Steve Martin plays the banjo and he is cool.
Brian and I made a wedding video for some friends of ours who were getting married and so we watched countless hours of childhood videos to find good, embarassing clips. Well, apparently the groom took banjo lessons when he was younger and his parents had videotaped banjo recitals! And you better believe that footage ended up in that video!
