How not to prepare dinner

Since I have been giving out so many helpful tips lately, I thought I would continue with that theme today.  It seems B and I are on a roll getting “settled” in to the new house.  That was sarcasm, you fools!

Last night, we prepared our first home cooked meal in the new house and we didn’t burn the house down, though at one point it sounded like a better idea.  The problems started on my end because apparently after eating take out for weeks, I have forgotten how to grocery shop and cook.  I was making the simplest dish, quesadillas, something we eat almost weekly.  I was halfway through the preparations when I realized I was missing two key ingredients!  Off B runs to the store.  As he is pulling out of the driveway, I remember a third missing ingredient.  The night before I broke the almost full bottle of Frank’s sauce, a crucial part of quesadillas.  Hey, at least I remembered before B left the store!

I will skip through the boring cooking details, but a myriad of annoyances occurred including not knowing the in and outs of the kitchen appliances, forgetting where I put all the dishes, not having enough counterspace due the all the half unpacked boxes and no lights in the dining room to see what we were eating.  Whew, are you annoyed?  I am all over again!

On to the clean up.  This is where it just got ridiculous.  B, my wonderful husband, was on dish duty last night.  The new house has one of those handy soap pumps built right into the sink.  Well of course we had to take advantage of this super cool feature!  B filled the soap dispenser full, an entire small bottle, right down the… oh crap.  The stupid soap dispenser had no bottle attached!  We just dumped and entire thing of Dawn soap into our cabinet under the sink.  Oh the mess!  The horrible, disgusting– wait, it’s soap.  Still it was a mess, one that I fear I will be cleaning up for weeks to come.  That cabinet might forever be a sticky, but clean-smelling mess.

An entire roll of paper towels later, I leave you with my word of advice, look before you pour!

I just wanted to say that quesadillas are one of our weekend favorites. We usually make them out of whatever we have on hand - ham and swiss, chicken breast and mushroom, ground beef and red peppers - just add tortillas and cheese. It sounds like you make much fancier ones - mind sharing your recipe?
