If my movies studies have taught me anything, this seems like a precursor. I would expect a volcano to be created nearby or possibly some drilling has woken up a giant Godzilla-like monster. The safest bet for survival is to develop an interesting plot-line for yourselves, and whatever you do don't go to sleep; that's a sure fire bet for tragedy.
