Surprise Marciemo, and a question.

Happy real Birthday, Marcie!  Marcie turned the big 2-5 today.  Saturday we celebrated at a surprise party.  Marcie’s parents planned the whole thing, including flying BFF Jenna up from Texas!  It was awesome.  I totally take credit for getting Marcie to the party with no suspicion.  Really all I did was tell her I wanted to go out to dinner and she did the rest.  She even picked the restaurant the party was already planned at!  Do we know this girl or what.

Of course you know what this whole post is leading up to, right?  PICTURES!  Parties are another opportunity to pull out the camera.

Surprise!  She totally cried.

Singing Happy Birthday to a candle in a bowl of cheese.  Awesome.

Yes, that is a little blue bag.  Say it with me, jealous.

The margaritas were really flowing at this point.  Jenna, my girl who I miss so much, is the blurry one.  Whoops on my part.

B and I.

And there is that darn sass again.  I didn’t get a great haircut picture, but I promise it is cute!

Now I have  question for the photogs out there.  I was using my 50 mm prime lens all night because I feel it is the best (out of the three lens I own) in low light.  It was decent, but not great.  It was really hard to take pictures without standing on the other side of the room.  And there was also the whole low light issue.  I had the ISO pretty high, hence the grain shots, but what else can I do in low light, without using a flash?  Do you just rely on after editing to fix the color?  Is there a good zoom lens that is also decent for indoor shots?  What do you use for indoor party situations?

Gooooooood pictures! Looks like lots of fun - I’m glad she was actually surprised!

I don’t ever use a flash. I use my Canon 85mm f/1.8 for inside shots like yours. I have to stand waaaaaaay on the other side of the room to get shots. :o) I use the lowest aperture humanly possible (usually somewere in the low 2’s) and I bump up the ISO as well, sometimes way up to 1600 although I try to keep it as low as possible. I just take extra care to focus properly and hold the camera steady when taking my shots. Some just don’t turn out, but the majority are okay. I just posted some photos on my photography blog of “Baby Girl” that were taken indoor in poor pot-lighting, using the technique described above. They were all a little yellowy, but nothing a little PhotoShop can’t fix! PhotoShop is amazing… it is your friend!
